Every Woman's Life Program
In an effort to help combat breast cancer mortality among indigent women, The Health Wagon refers patients to this valuable program in cooperation with the Cumberland Plateau Health District. This program helps to promote the availability of that important first step in diagnosing breast cancer: access to a mammogram. This program is for women ages 50-64.
American Breast Cancer Foundation
Another obstacle that we have seen in the community is financial inability to pay for mammograms. To overcome this obstacle, we have since joined forces with the American Breast Cancer Foundation (ABCF), and have served in excess of an estimated 1,000 women since The Health Wagon brought the program to the region. These women were provided with a no cost mammogram.
Home Visitation
Home visits are made to acutely and chronically ill clients who cannot travel to The Health Wagon outreach sites. In addition, home visits are made to follow-up patients after hospital discharge much earlier than in past years. This service aids in promoting continuity of care.
Community Health Fairs
The Health Wagon participates in several community health fairs and outreaches throughout the year. The Health Wagon participated in a health fair in conjunction with Healing Hands in Bristol, TN. 104 patients received care. The Health Wagon participated by providing pap smears, addressing women's health concerns, breast exams and mammogram registration. Preceptorship was also provided to third year medical students from the Quillen Dishner College of Medicine, as part of their rural health care practicum. This annual series of health fairs are held in the communities of Haysi, Hurley and Clinchco. 259 patients were provided health care in 2006. Additionally, The Health Wagon provided physical exams for the Youth Build Program in Wise, VA. This event helped to provide many youths in the program with an extensive physical exam and needed medical care that they would otherwise not have access to.
Influenza Vaccine Outreach Sites and Drive-Thru Flu Shot Clinic
A drive-thru flu shot clinic was offered on multiple occasions at several prominent sites such as Wal-Mart and Food City locations. Several key employers such as Crutchfield and Sykes Corporations also opted for employee immunization clinics as well. These clinics were extremely successful. The first ever innovative clinic of this type was performed by The Health Wagon several years ago. Patients were offered the immunization with the convenience of never having to leave the comfort of their car. Feedback was highly favorable. One woman with two small children that opted for the flu shot while in her vehicle said "this was too good to be true." Patients could also come inside the mobile clinic as well for the immunization.
